How Trauma-Informed Pain Care can enhance your practice
Currently, many health professionals lack education and training on principles of trauma informed care to inform and influence practice patterns, policies, and the therapeutic context of healing. Given our increased understanding of the role of trauma’s imprint on our nervous and immune systems, healthcare practitioners who implement trauma informed care principles are well-positioned to decrease vicarious trauma, increase patient activation through building trust and improving value for patients with persistent pain conditions.
Additionally, there are many areas of the United States where access to mental health services is limited. Persons with persistent pain carry deep emotional burdens and find themselves in the care of other healthcare practitioners who may be limited to affect change on emotional or spiritual wounds. In many cases, non-mental healthcare practitioners become de-facto mental health providers exposing them to vicarious trauma.
Trauma impacts how people interact with both the healthcare practitioner and healthcare system. Persons with significant trauma histories are exquisitely sensitive to power differentials and require safety, transparency, choice, collaboration, and empowerment. Trauma-informed pain care seeks to provide a therapeutic environment for patients while recognizing and respecting the need for trust, self-determination, and collaborative problem-solving. This course will allow clinicians to realize and recognize the impact of trauma on the pain experience, respond by integrating knowledge into practice, and resisting re-traumatization.
This course invites clinicians to shift their perspective of the patient/client interaction from “what’s wrong with you” to “what happened to you”; providing the healthcare practitioner with a trauma-informed lens to view their patients/clients. Ultimately, healthcare practitioners will better understand how a patient/client’s past experiences shape their current pain experience through screening and identifying traumatic exposure, understanding the role of early childhood adversity on future healthcare risk, and implementing principles of trauma-informed care through case-based scenarios.
"I've structured the course to keep things sequential and straightforward to assimilate"
